Why this itinerary is designed this way

Sri Lanka packs four different holidays into one small island: temple culture in Kandy, the world's most scenic train ride into the tea hills, a leopard safari in Yala and ramparts over the ocean at Galle. Costs run 20-30% below Kerala for comparable hotels, and the e-visa is instant.

βœ” Kandy Temple of the Tooth + a Cultural dance show

βœ” Nanu Oya β†’ Ella train ride through tea estates (reserved 2nd class seats)

βœ” Nine Arch Bridge sunrise + Little Adam's Peak hike

βœ” Yala National Park jeep safari at dawn (leopards, elephants)

βœ” Galle Fort ramparts + a whale-watching option in Mirissa

Best route & how to travel it

India β†’ Colombo (CMB) 1.5 – 3.5 hrs Β· INR 10,000 – 18,000 return

βœ… Direct flight β€” SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo, Air India

Chennai is 1.5 hrs away, Delhi/Mumbai 3.5 hrs; fares are among the lowest of any international trip.

Alternative: Ferry/flight via Chennai-Nagapattinam routes for budget travellers.

Colombo β†’ Kandy 3.5 hrs car / 3 hrs train Β· Car INR 6,000; train INR 300-1,000

βœ… Private car or the scenic hill train

A car lets you add Pinnawala and a spice garden on the way.

Alternative: Kandy train from Colombo Fort is a classic ride, book reserved 2nd class.

Kandy β†’ Ella 7 hrs total / split with a night Β· INR 700 – 1,500 reserved

βœ… Train Kandy β†’ Nanu Oya β†’ Ella (the world's most scenic ride)

Doing it by road means you miss the tea-estate viaducts that define Sri Lanka.

Alternative: Car via Nuwara Eliya if you have limited mobility or tight timing.

Ella β†’ Yala / Galle 2.5 hrs / 3 hrs Β· INR 7,000 – 9,000 per day (car + driver)

βœ… Private car with driver-guide

Sri Lanka's bus network is cheap but slow; a driver-guide costs about INR 900 a head per day for four people.

Alternative: Tuk-tuk self-hire (popular with backpackers, not for families).

πŸš• Transport Playbook

Car with driver-guide is the standard
INR 6,500-9,000 per day covers the car, fuel, driver's food and lodging. Split four ways it beats everything.

Book train seats 30 days ahead
Reserved 2nd class on Kandy–Ella sells out. We use the official reservation window; scalpers charge 3x.

Tuk-tuks with a meter app
PickMe (Sri Lanka's Uber) gives metered tuk-tuk fares β€” always cheaper than negotiating.

Safari jeeps
Book through your hotel, insist on a licensed tracker and confirm the park entry fee is separate.

Food guide Β· what to eat

🍲 Rice & Curry

The Sri Lankan thali β€” 7 curries with red rice, INR 200-400.

🍲 Hoppers & Egg Hoppers

Bowl-shaped pancakes with sambol, breakfast staple.

🍲 Kottu Roti

Chopped roti stir-fried on a griddle β€” the island's street food king.

🍲 Pol Sambol

Coconut sambol that goes with everything.

🍲 Ceylon Tea at the estate

Drink it where it grows β€” factory-fresh BOP.

Indian food availability

Colombo and Kandy have plenty of South Indian restaurants (Shanmugas, Palmyrah, Ananthi). Tamil influence means vegetarian food is easy to find everywhere in the hill country.

Vegetarian / Jain note

Very easy: ask for 'sambar without fish' and confirm curries are veg β€” Sri Lankan curries often include dried fish (umbalakada).

Daily food budget

INR 700 – 1,400 per person per day.

What to avoid

  • Never photograph with your back to a Buddha statue β€” it is illegal and police do act on it.
  • Avoid swimming on the south coast during the south-west monsoon (May–Sep); red flags are enforced.
  • Do not buy gems without a certificate from a licensed dealer; the Galle 'sapphire deal' is the classic scam.
  • Skip street food in the first 24 hours if your stomach is sensitive; hotel kitchens are safer early in the trip.
  • Check whether Yala or Wilpattu is less crowded that month β€” we swap parks to protect your safari time.
