Kashmir's price swings more than any other Indian destination: the same Gulmarg hotel is INR 5,000 in March and INR 18,000 in June. Our route uses Srinagar as the single base for two day trips, which means you unpack once, save on hotel hops and keep the evenings free for Dal Lake.

Best route & how to travel it

Direct winter/summer seasonal routes exist; otherwise Delhi connections are frequent.
Alternative: Combine with Katra/Vaishno Devi if you want a pilgrimage add-on.

A day trip keeps you on Dal Lake and saves paying Gulmarg's peak hotel rates.
Alternative: Overnight in Gulmarg for snowfall mornings and a quieter Gondola at 8am.

One cab for the whole trip
INR 3,000-3,800 per day for an Innova/Scorpio including fuel and driver. Book through a registered Srinagar operator.
Pony and union cabs
In Pahalgam and Sonmarg the local unions set the rates. Get the printed rate card and pay per seat, not per head.
Gondola tickets online only
gondolaproject.com sells official tickets. Street agents charge a 30-40% markup for the same seat.
Winter driving
Dec-Feb requires chains on the Tangmarg-Gulmarg stretch. Our drivers carry them; do not self-drive in snow.

D1 Srinagar Arrive Srinagar — Dal Lake shikara
Land at SXR, check into a houseboat or lake-view hotel, evening shikara ride through the floating gardens.

Agent tip · Nigeen Lake is quieter and cheaper than Dal, and the water is cleaner. Ask for a mid-lake houseboat, not a shore one.

D2 Gulmarg Gulmarg day trip + Gondola
Two-hour drive to Gulmarg, the Gondola to Apharwat phase 2 (about 4,000 m) and snow activities.

Sonmarg's Thajiwas glacier when the road is open (Apr–Nov); Doodhpathri's meadows as the quieter alternative.

Early breakfast and airport drop. Srinagar airport has tight security, so 2.5 hours is the safe buffer.

Indian food availability
It is India, and Srinagar has plenty of North Indian restaurants (Mughal Darbar, Ahdoos, Krishna Vaishno Dhaba for pure veg). Houseboats can cook Jain/Satvik meals on request.
Vegetarian / Jain note
Very easy: Kashmiri vegetarian food (dum aloo, haak, nadru, morel yakhni) is distinctive and worth ordering deliberately.

What to avoid
- Do not book a 'Srinagar only' hotel-hopping itinerary — you lose a day to packing every single time.
- Avoid unregistered pony operators; insist on the union rate card and a receipt.
- Check travel advisories and road status for Sonmarg/Zoji La before booking that day.
- Do not rely on a single network: BSNL/Jio work best; keep cash, ATMs run dry in Pahalgam.
- In deep winter (Jan) the Gondola phase 2 may shut for weather — keep a buffer day.
