Turkey went viral for Cappadocia's balloons, but the trip only works if you sequence it right: 3 nights Istanbul, fly to Cappadocia for 2 nights (balloons need 2 mornings as backup for cancelled flights), then Pamukkale and Ephesus before flying home from Izmir or Istanbul. The Turkish lira makes luxury hotels far cheaper than Europe.

Best route & how to travel it
✅ Direct — Turkish Airlines, IndiGo, Air India
Direct flights mean you can start sightseeing the same evening and avoid Gulf layovers.
Alternative: Sharjah/Doha connections are cheaper in peak but add 4-6 hrs.
✅ Fly to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV)
The 11-hr overnight bus is a rite of passage, not a holiday plan.
Alternative: High-speed train to Konya + bus for a slower, cheaper route.
✅ Fly to Denizli, or drive with a lunch stop
The drive is scenic but long; flying keeps families fresh for the terraces.
Alternative: Overnight bus (10 hrs) for budget travellers.
✅ Fly from Izmir (ADB) to IST/SAW
Saves a 6-hour drive back west and lets you fly home from Istanbul.
Alternative: Return to Cappadocia instead if your flight home is from Kayseri.

Domestic flights: Pegasus vs Turkish
Pegasus (SAW) is cheaper but uses the Sabiha Gökçen airport, 90 min from the city. Check which airport before booking.
Cappadocia airport transfers
Kayseri is 1 hr 15 min from Göreme, Nevşehir 45 min. Shared shuttles cost EUR 15 pp; private is EUR 70 per car.
Do not rent a car in Istanbul
Traffic, parking and toll systems are punishing. Rent only if you self-drive Cappadocia's valleys.

D1 Istanbul Arrive Istanbul — Sultanahmet evening
Land at IST, transfer to the old city, and an easy first evening around Sultanahmet square.

Indian food availability
Istanbul has a handful of Indian restaurants (Indian Express, Delhi Gate, Zaika Indian) around Sultanahmet and Taksim. Outside Istanbul expect mostly Turkish food — carry ready-to-eat packs for kids.
Vegetarian / Jain note
Turkish meze culture is vegetarian-friendly: hummus, dolma, grilled halloumi, mücver, çiğ börek. Say 'etsiz' (without meat).

What to avoid
- Balloon flights get cancelled by wind 20-30% of mornings — never book a same-day flight out of Cappadocia.
- Ramadan is fine for tourists, but some restaurants close in daylight; carry snacks for midday.
- Do not accept 'free' shoe-shine or tea invitations near the Grand Bazaar — that is the classic distraction scam.
- Shoe shiners aside, never leave bags in cars; break-ins in tourist car parks do happen.
- Taxis without a meter or without the 'DURAK' sign will quote 3x. Use the BiTaksi or Uber app.
