Chennai is 1.5 hrs away, Delhi/Mumbai 3.5 hrs; fares are among the lowest of any international trip.
Alternative: Ferry/flight via Chennai-Nagapattinam routes for budget travellers.
✅ Private car or the scenic hill train
A car lets you add Pinnawala and a spice garden on the way.
Alternative: Kandy train from Colombo Fort is a classic ride, book reserved 2nd class.
✅ Train Kandy → Nanu Oya → Ella (the world's most scenic ride)
Doing it by road means you miss the tea-estate viaducts that define Sri Lanka.
Alternative: Car via Nuwara Eliya if you have limited mobility or tight timing.

Sri Lanka's bus network is cheap but slow; a driver-guide costs about INR 900 a head per day for four people.
Alternative: Tuk-tuk self-hire (popular with backpackers, not for families).

Indian food availability
Colombo and Kandy have plenty of South Indian restaurants (Shanmugas, Palmyrah, Ananthi). Tamil influence means vegetarian food is easy to find everywhere in the hill country.
Vegetarian / Jain note
Very easy: ask for 'sambar without fish' and confirm curries are veg — Sri Lankan curries often include dried fish (umbalakada).

What to avoid
- Never photograph with your back to a Buddha statue — it is illegal and police do act on it.
- Avoid swimming on the south coast during the south-west monsoon (May–Sep); red flags are enforced.
- Do not buy gems without a certificate from a licensed dealer; the Galle 'sapphire deal' is the classic scam.
- Skip street food in the first 24 hours if your stomach is sensitive; hotel kitchens are safer early in the trip.
- Check whether Yala or Wilpattu is less crowded that month — we swap parks to protect your safari time.
